Set and Forget Futures Trading: A Realistic 2-Week Review

Oct 13, 2026
Every day, another trading "guru" online claims to be consistently profitable. But how many of them actually show you the proof?
If you’ve been in the trading space for any length of time, you know how easy it is for people to post winning trades after they happen. True transparency requires clear documentation: a timestamped trade setup before the market moves, and a clean result after.
In this two-week trading review, I’m peeling back the curtain on my private trading community. You’ll see the exact trades we took, the methodology behind our "set and forget" strategy, how we manage risk, and how everyday traders—even those working a 9-to-5—can execute this style of futures trading.

What is "Set and Forget" Futures Trading?
Most people think trading requires staring at charts for eight hours a day, stressing over every tick.
With a set and forget strategy, you map out your trade parameters in advance:
  • Entry Point (E): A limit order set at a key level where you expect price to react.
  • Stop-Loss (S): A preset market order to cap your risk if the trade goes against you.
  • Take-Profit / Target (T): A pre-positioned order to automatically lock in profits.
Once these three orders are set in your platform, you can walk away. Whether you set your orders at 6:00 PM after getting home from work or before heading out for the morning commute, the market executes the trade automatically.

2-Week Trade Breakdown: The Raw Results
Over the last two weeks, we posted every setup in real-time inside our private student chatroom. Here is a breakdown of how those setups played out across popular futures markets like Micro Gold, Crude Oil, Micro Dow, and Micro Nasdaq.
Note on Transparency: In this 2-week period, we took 7 trades: 6 winners and 1 loss. We don't hide our losses—losing trades are simply the cost of doing business in the market.
1. Micro Gold (MGC)
  • Setup Posted: Tuesday at 10:04 AM
  • Execution: Micro Gold triggered smoothly at our limit entry level and rallied straight toward our profit target.
  • Result: +$86 per contract (Approx. $430 profit on a 5-contract position).
  • Takeaway: We closed this position slightly early to comply with prop firm evaluation rules (which require positions to be closed before 5:00 PM EST). Traders using cash accounts were able to let the runner continue even higher.
2. New Zealand Dollar Futures (6M)
  • Execution: Simple limit order entry off our mapped level.
  • Result: +$255 per contract.
  • Takeaway: Another clean example of setting an order, letting the price action come to us, and exiting automatically at our target level.
3. Crude Oil (CL) – Overnight Trade
  • Setup Posted: September 15th (Evening Session)
  • Execution: Planned around 6:00 PM, untouched during the day, triggered overnight, and hit target before morning.
  • Result: Solid winning trade.
  • Takeaway: Perfect for 9-to-5 workers. You don’t need to stay up all night; you let the overnight market liquidity do the work while you sleep.
4. Micro Dow (MYM)
  • Setup Posted: Evening at 6:22 PM
  • Execution: Triggered the following morning—right as I was driving my kids to school.
  • Result: +$85 per contract (Approx. $425 profit on 5 contracts).
5. Micro Nasdaq (MNQ)
  • Setup Posted: September 18th at 4:05 PM (1-minute chart analysis)
  • Execution: Price retested our mapped zone, respected the level, and moved directly into profit.
  • Result: Strong risk-to-reward payout.

Why Win Rate Isn't the Whole Story: Risk-to-Reward Ratio
While a week with six wins and one loss feels great, focusing purely on win rate is a mistake. What truly builds long-term accounts is your Risk-to-Reward Ratio (R:R).
Most setups in our community aim for a 3:1 Risk-to-Reward ratio.
$$\text{Risk-to-Reward} = \frac{\text{Potential Profit}}{\text{Potential Loss}}$$
When you target a 3:1 ratio:
  • You risk $100 to make $300.
  • Even with a 50% win rate, you remain significantly profitable over time.
You don't need a 100% win rate or complex, stress-inducing strategies to make progress in the futures market. You need a structured routine, solid risk management, and the patience to let setups play out.

Prop Firm Rules vs. Personal Cash Accounts
If you trade through funded account challenges or evaluation programs (prop firms), pay close attention to your holding times. Most prop firms require all positions to be flat before the market close (typically 5:00 PM EST).
  • For Prop Firm Traders: Stick strictly to daily closure rules, even if it means taking profit a few ticks early.
  • For Cash Account Traders: You have the flexibility to hold trades through the close or let partial positions ("runners") trail into the next session.
