Stop Letting Winning Trades Turn Into Losers [Do This Instead]

Oct 28, 2025
Stop Watching +1R Winners Round-Trip Into Losers: The 1.5R Rule You’ll Use TodayYou’re up $300… $400… $500 on a clean supply-zone short.
Chart looks perfect.

Then—wick, reverse, stop-out.

+1R → 0 → –1R.
If this haunts you, Mitch and Ryan from Precision Trading Labs just dropped the exact rule that ends it. In this 2-minute clip, they dissect real futures setups (ES, YM, Micro Gold, Crude) and reveal when—and how—to move your stop so winners stay winners.

The Simple Rule: +1R to +1.5R = Lock It Down
Profit Level
Action
+1R
Move stop to break-even (or trail below recent swing)
+1.5R
Mandatory: Take partials OR move stop to +0.5R–1R
+2R+
Let runners breathe—but never below +1R
Why? At +1.5R, you’ve proven the thesis. Anything less than break-even from here is giving back edge.

“Drilled the Zone” = Take 1R Like an AdultScenario: Price blasts through your demand/supply zone with momentum.

Supply Zone
┌──────────┐
│ │ ← Entry short
└──────────┘
DROP ↓↓ (Drilled = no base, no fight)
Rule:
  • If price drills the zone (closes 1–2 ATR beyond), take 1R at market or scale out.
  • Do NOT wait for 2R+—momentum fades fast.
  • Trail the rest only if fresh higher-timeframe structure supports.
Example: Micro Gold short
  • Entry: $2,650 zone
  • Drilled to $2,630 in 3 candles
  • +1.2R hit → scaled 50% → trailed rest → +2.8R total

Break-Even vs. Partial Profits: Context Is King
Context
Stop Strategy
Fresh Zone + High ATR
Hold to +1R → move to BE → let breathe
Old/Retested Zone
+1R → partial 50% → trail with 0.5 ATR
Low Volatility (tight base)
+1.5R → full exit or tight trail
Pro Tip: Use TradingView ATR (14) to measure “wiggle room.”
  • Stop buffer = 0.5–1 ATR below zone
  • Never trail tighter than 0.75 ATR until +2R

Real Examples (ES / YM / Gold / Crude)
Market
Setup
Management
Outcome
ES
4H supply retest
+1R → BE, +1.5R → partial
+3.2R
YM
Drilled demand
+1R full exit
+1R (no regret)
Micro Gold
Overnight base
+1.2R → trail
+4.1R
Crude
Choppy retest
+0.8R → cut
–0.2R (saved)

Why This Works for Prop & Funded Traders
  • No drawdown traps → Stay under 1–2% daily risk
  • Consistent R:R → Pass evaluations faster
  • Set-and-forget → Place orders, walk away

Implement Today: Your 3-Step Checklist
  1. Pre-trade: Mark zone + calculate 1R, 1.5R, 2R levels
  2. At +1R: Move stop to break-even
  3. At +1.5R:
    • Take 50% off OR
    • Move stop to +0.5R
Use TradingView alerts: “Price = 1.5R target” → trigger management.
